Composition of the Skills Programme

Core Module

The core module of 1 credit must be achieved

All Core modules must be completed.

Module : Safe Practices

  • Verify compliance to safety, health and environmental requirements in the workplace
  • Provide primary emergency care/first aid as an advanced first responder
  • Erect, use and dismantle access equipment for construction work
Module : Building Construction Management

  • Describe the composition, role-players and the role of the construction industry in the South African economy
  • Develop construction work plans
  • Procure building and civil construction materials, tools and equipment
  • Identify, use and maintain tools, machines, equipment and materials for building and civil construction activities
  • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications

Painting Specialisation

  • Prepare surfaces for painting (compulsory for the painting trade)
  • Prime and apply paint to surfaces (compulsory for the painting trade)

Tiling Specialisation

  • Prepare surfaces and apply tiles (compulsory for the tiling trade

  • Apply screeds to a concrete floor (compulsory for the plastering trade)

Masonry Specialisation

  • Build masonry superstructures using concrete hollow units (compulsory for the masonry trade)
  • Build masonry superstructures using solid units (compulsory for the masonry trade)
  • Set out, excavate, cast concrete strip foundations and build foundation walling (compulsory for the masonry trade)
  • Pave surfaces using flexible segmental paving
  • Pave surfaces using rigid segmental clay paving
  • Prepare and install imprint concrete pavement
  • Prepare and lay precast block paving
  • Build decorative masonry elements

Carpentry Specialisation

  • Clad roof structures (compulsory for the carpentry trade)
  • Erect roof trusses (compulsory for the carpentry trade)
  • Install finishing components (compulsory for the carpentry trade)
  • Manufacture timber roof trusses (compulsory for the roofer trade + all of above)
  • Manufacture and install partitioning and wall paneling from wood
  • Manufacture wooden components
  • Prepare a site for ceiling and partition installation
  • Manufacture and fit door and window frames

Concrete Formwork Specialisation

  • Fabricate, erect and strip formwork for straight walls, columns and bases (compulsory for the concrete formwork trade)
  • Fabricate, erect and strip steel and timber formwork for T-walls, decks and beams and single flight staircases (compulsory for the concrete formwork trade)
  • Fabricate, erect and strip steel and timber formwork for curved, sloped and E-walls and curved bases with kicker, incorporating waterbar
